How Yuean Hai Began

一九九四年,曾淼源在卑詩省創立源海。最初沒有招牌、沒有店面——只有一張案台、一把竹刷,和他大半輩子磨出的書畫功底。

他為朋友裱,為藏家裱,為自己的作品裱。每一張紙背後,都是一段值得被好好對待的故事。

一九九六年,他在列治文找到一個落腳的地方——也就是源海至今的家。那一年起,「源海」不再只是一個工作室,而是一扇能被推開的門。

Yuean Hai began in 1994 as one man's quiet practice in British Columbia. There was no shopfront yet — only a workbench, a bamboo brush, and a lifetime of training behind every cut and crease. He framed for friends, for collectors, for his own paintings. Each sheet of paper, he believed, carried a story that deserved to be properly held.

In 1996, he found a place to stay — in Richmond, the same address Yuean Hai keeps today. From that year on, Yuean Hai became more than a studio. It became a door anyone could walk through.

為什麼一位書法家會開裱框店?

因為沒有人比寫了一輩子字的人,更知道一張紙該被怎樣對待——它怕什麼、它喜歡什麼、它裱起來掛在牆上,會在十年後、二十年後變成什麼樣子。

在源海,他是寫字的人,也是裱字的人;是創作的人,也是修復的人。三十年來,這兩件事在他手裡,本來就是同一件事。

Why would a calligrapher open a framing shop? Because no one understands paper like someone who has spent a lifetime writing on it. He knew what paper feared, what it loved, and how it would age behind glass — ten, twenty years down the line.

At Yuean Hai, he never separated the artist from the framer. The hand that wrote was the hand that mounted. For thirty years, they were the same hand.

手寫的招牌,手畫的四君子

Signature Works

走進源海,他的字無處不在。

門口的「源海」二字,是他親筆。店內最深處的〈四君子〉長卷——梅、蘭、竹、菊——是他畫給自己這家店的禮物。一幅〈白描觀音・心經半月〉,畫了又畫,最後留下這一張,裱進博物館級玻璃,每天看顧著進進出出的客人。

這些作品我們從不出售。它們是源海的根。

Walk into Yuean Hai, and his hand is everywhere. The two characters above the door — 源海 — are his. The set of Four Gentlemen scrolls in the back room was his gift to his own shop. A White-Line Guanyin with the Heart Sutra, painted again and again until he kept this one, now framed behind museum glass, watches over every customer who passes through.

None of these are for sale. They are the roots of the place.

After Retirement · 退休之後

他現在退休了

但「退休」這兩個字,對一個寫了一輩子字的人來說,從來不是真正的停下來。他偶爾走進店裡,挑挑刺、糾正某個不夠正的折角,不發一語就走出去。

三十年前的那支筆,從未真正放下。


But for a man who has written every day of his life, "retired" never quite means what it sounds like. Sometimes he still walks into the shop, finds a fold that isn't quite right, corrects it without a word, and walks out.

The brush he picked up thirty years ago has never truly been put down.
